In 1870, Brewery de Amstel was founded in Amsterdam near the river Amstel by two good friends. In 1954, Amstel started building a brewery in Suriname. A year later, Amstel was the first Dutch brewery to export beer in cans. At that time, the total export of Amstel beer amounted to 101,000 hectoliters per year. In 1958, an Amstel-related brewery in Jordan produced her first beer. In 1960 the third brewery in Amstel was opened. This was the Antillean brewery on Curaçao. Two years later, the production of Amstel beer started under license by Almaza Brewery in Lebanon. In 1963, new breweries were started in Puerto Rico and Greece. Since 1968 all Amstel beers were brewed in Heineken breweries and the Amstel Brewery was demolished at the Mauritskade in Amsterdam. The quality and ingredients of Amstel are today exactly the same as in 1870. Amstel is brewed from rye and extra fragrant hops. Amstel is a real full-malt pils, typically fresh with a full flavor.
