In 1615 Willem Neerfeldt started a brewery in the town of Grolle, the present Groenlo. His daughter married Peter Cuijper, who was appointed the Guild master of the brewer's Guild in Grolle in 1676. In 1895, the now successful brewery De Klok was sold by to Theo de Groen from a true brewer's family. In the same year, a number of textile manufacturers, traders and bankers decided to set up the brewery in Enschede. During World War I, the commodities were scarce, which meant that beer was lost and sales fell sharply. The board decided to sell the brewery to Theo de Groen. In 1922, Beer Brewery De Klok from Groenlo merged with the brewery in Enschede, which was later renamed Grolsche Beer Brewery. As a replacement for the old breweries in Enschede and in Groenlo the current brewery was put into operation in 2004, a modern complex on the border of Enschede and Boekelo.
